Where it comes from
Cleopatra bathed in donkey milk. So did the queens who came after her.
She is remembered as the most beautiful woman who ever lived, and the story has always been that she kept her skin soft in baths of donkey milk. She was not the only one. Roman empresses did the same, and one of them was written down in detail.
Poppaea Sabina, wife of Nero, travelled with five hundred she-asses so she could bathe in their milk wherever she went. Pliny the Elder recorded it in his Natural History, the encyclopedia of the ancient world (11.238).

In 2011 a research team analysed what is actually in that milk and titled the paper "Poppea's bath liquor" (Cunsolo et al., Journal of Proteomics). Later work found donkey milk reduced UVB-induced skin-barrier damage and raised filaggrin, a barrier protein (Li et al. 2023).
A note on Cleopatra: her milk bath reaches us through popular tradition rather than a surviving ancient text. Poppaea's is documented.
